Christmas is a fun, frenzied and food-filled holiday for all of us. It is easy for us to forget in the midst of all this activity that our pets may want to participate just a little too much.

Common foods like avocados, chocolate, onions, garlic, grapes, gum or candy are very toxic to both dogs and cats.

Many common household holiday items, such as ribbons, bubbling lights, fire salts and tinsel can be dangerous to your pets if ingested. Even though every kitty loves to play with the ribbon, be sure that his play is supervised to prevent ingestion!

In addition, beautiful plants that decorate many of our homes are toxic to both cats and dogs if swallowed. Some plants to watch for include Christmas rose, holly, lilies, mistletoe and poinsettias.

If you think your animal may have ingested any of these items, notify your veterinarian immediately for further help.

While celebrating with your holiday feast, try to avoid allowing the family pet to have too many table scraps. They may love the turkey and stuffing as much as we do, but you won’t always like the results. Many animals are not used to the sudden change in diet, which may cause vomiting or diarrhea. Some pets that have overindulged will even experience pancreatitis, which can be a life threatening illness.

Instead of allowing your pets to enjoy the same foods and decorations that we do, consider getting the pet-safe toys and treats from your vet or an area pet store. Most animals are just as happy with a good Kong from Santa as they would be with a piece of turkey! Happy Holidays!
